The ecological transition has started. It must be fair and just.

21 European Justice & Peace Commissions came together for their Annual International Workshop and General Assembly which was held in Belgium from the 1^st till the 4^th of October. The theme chosen for this year’s meetings was “Integral Ecology: overcoming the social and environmental crises.” Daniel Darmanin, president of the Justice and Peace Commission (Malta) attended the four-day meeting.

In their final declaration, the delegates highlighted the need for structural change as a cornerstone of climate change policy. Whilst ecological conversion at a personal level is important, it is not enough. Moreover, this ecological transition needs to be both fair and just. The Workshop, co-organised and co-hosted by the Flemish and French-speaking Justice and Peace Commissions in Belgium, was based on the methodology of “See, Judge, Act”. In a symbolic action which illustrated their commitment to move from reflection to action, attendees also planted an apple tree in a Beguinage.
