As the European Union navigates a world marked by conflicts and division, Justice and Peace Europe, the Community of Sant’Egidio and Pax Christi International, as Catholic organisations, urge a reaffirmation of the EU’s foundational commitment to Just Peace. This vision, as envisaged by the EU’s Founders, sees peace not merely as the absence of war, but as a lasting goal rooted in justice, human dignity, and dialogue.
This manifesto, titled: “Europe’s Promise of Peace: Embracing Human Security and Just Peace in EU Policies”, invites to a more holistic and sustainable approach to peace, security, and conflict prevention, through key recommendations, through:
- the reaffirming of international law, human rights and the renewal of multilateral institutions;
- the enhancement of diplomatic efforts and the pursuit of an integral approach to peace;
- a preventive approach to conflicts, fostering human security and showing solidarity with those affected by war.
In these challenging times, and at a critical moment of renewal for the European institutions, we hope the reflections and proposals contained in this manifesto may inspire and guide EU decision-makers towards a just and lasting peace.
We also invite civil society organisations, religious institutions and citizens, to join us in a culture of encounter, peace and nonviolence, which is embraced, cherished and spread by each one of us.
